An unexpected move for a company selling an AI writing assistant.
Superhuman announced that it has acquired GPTZero. This AI detection platform provides services including hallucination and plagiarism detection, as well as a handy tool showing what percentage of the internet is AI-generated. Superhuman said it plans to integrate GPTZero into its Superhuman Go AI assistant to expand its existing initiatives around AI and authenticity. Teachers and students remain Superhuman’s top priority audience post-acquisition. GPTZero emphasized that Superhuman will help embed its tools directly into environments where people already read and write. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
On the surface, this seems like an odd pairing. The press release announcing the acquisition focuses on public concerns about identifying AI-generated content—but Superhuman actively encourages users to generate content with AI. The company’s most popular product is the AI writing assistant Grammarly, which does include its own AI detection tools. Yet Grammarly’s push to embed AI resources throughout its platform has also drawn criticism. Notably, the company attempted to provide users with AI-generated feedback mimicking the voice and style of real writers—prompting strong objections from those writers.
